The Scan

What to expect during your scan

At OsteoScan USA, we are committed to making your scan experience comfortable, efficient, and informative. Your appointment will take approximately 40–45 minutes.

If you have your most recent DEXA scan report(s), feel free to bring them with you. (This is not required.)

Here’s a quick checklist to help you prepare:

Before Your Appointment

  • Fast for at least 4 hours.  Avoid eating to minimize gas that may obstruct the view of your spine.

  • Arrive 15 minutes early. Give yourself time to check in, use the restroom, and avoid delays.

  • Empty your bladder or bowels. A full bladder can interfere with spine imaging. Use the restroom before your scan.

  • Remove belly button jewelry. Metal or piercings can interfere with imaging.

What to Wear

  • Loose, comfortable clothing.  No need for special attire, but avoid one-piece outfits.

  • Your abdomen will be exposed.  If wearing a bra, your top will be lifted to the bra line for the lumbar spine scan.

  • Your upper thigh/groin area will be accessed.  Pants will need to be lowered to mid-thigh. Please wear underwear.

  • You'll be covered for privacy. A drape will be provided throughout the procedure.

Your Scan Appointment

  • Height and weight will be measured. Accurate metrics are essential for scan interpretation.

  • Lie comfortably on a padded exam table.

  • Hips will be scanned first.  Gel is applied to your upper thigh; you may feel light pressure.

  • Spine scan is next and performed through your abdomen; takes under 2 minutes.

  • Painless, quick, and radiation free.

After the Scan

  • Immediate results, viewable on screen during your appointment.

  • Expert consultation; a bone health specialist will explain your results and next steps.

  • You'll receive your results by email (for your physician).
